Intro to Health and Medical Sciences
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Intro to Health & Medical Sciences is a full year long non-clinical course that provides a back ground into the history of health care, health care facilities, trends, insurance, laws and ethics, and an overview of a variety of health careers, job classifications, and the educational training required. This class is required in order to be eligible for acceptance into the Nurse Aide Program. Guest speakers from the community will be invited to share information about their careers and work experiences.
GOAL: to give students the opportunity to learn more about the healthcare system and the many jobs available...ultimately using that knowledge to decide if the health care industry is a good fit for their career goals!
GRADING: 60% Mastery (tests, projects) / at least 1 weekly grade
40% Measure of progress (participation, daily assignments, note taking, clinical skills, class discussions, student effort and attitude) / at least 1 weekly grade
Health Assisting Careers
Course Objective:
This course is designed to introduce you to the nurse aide profession and prepare you for the Virginia State Board of Nursing Certification Exams. This year we will explore the role of the nurse aide; learn about medical terminology, bodily functions, and how to provide quality care for the elderly, those with medical conditions, and disabilities. You will learn in the classroom, the skills lab, and in the clinical setting providing care to actual patients/residents at a healthcare facility!
Course Description:
This is a year-long clinical course offered to juniors and seniors enrolled at Amherst County High School, and governed by the Va. State Board of Nursing. Limitations of the Board mandates no more than 10 students per instructor/class.
Students will complete a minimum of 120 hours of instruction including 40 hours of direct clinical care at Fairmont Crossing in Amherst. Students will acquire and practice hands on skills reaching proficiency in a lab setting prior to clinical work with the geriatric population.
After completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate required competencies using safety and infection control principles.
- Demonstrate understanding of the nurse assistant's role in the long-term care setting.
- Discuss the nurse assistant's role in caring for diverse client populations.
- Explain professional, legal, and ethical guidelines related to the nurse assistant's scope of practice.
- Demonstrate understanding of the client's basic rights in the healthcare setting.
- Discuss the importance of collaborating with the healthcare team including the client and the client's support persons.
- Describe the nurse assistant's contributions in providing holistic, compassionate, and quality patient care.
The successful completion of this course will render the student eligible to take a written and skills exam to obtain licensure as a certified nurse assistant through the Va. State Board of Nursing.
